Sense of Security: Aftermath of Extreme Left Insurgency and Conflict in Bankura District, West Bengal, India

Internally displaced people in Bankura, West Bengal are groups of persons who have been forced or obliged to leave their places of habitual residence as a result of avoiding the effects of armed conflict at the time of the Naxalite–Maoist movement, especially within the period 2000 to 2010. In this work, the current socio-economic scenario of the displaced and non-displaced people of the partially and fully affected conflicting area at Bankura district has been discussed and compared. The work has been done using a primary survey in the affected area of Ranibandh block, Bankura district, West Bengal. Descriptive studies have been done to compare the current situation of the displaced and non-displaced people of fully and partially affected areas. To understand the consequences on the Sense of Security in thepresent scenario after the end of this conflicting era, regression analyses have been done with the socio-economic profile of the people. It has been found that a larger population of people remained uneducated and lost their jobs. Many family members were died/killed, murdered or kidnapped. This has created a long-term effect on their life. The loss of job, change of occupation, under-education etc. are common among affected people. A very negligible part of the displaced have received government aid in different forms and are struggling to have a better lifestyle. It has been realised that at present, security related to job, health, education etc. are far from optimal, whereas with respect to social security, like political security, physical infrastructure, social infrastructure etc. people are in more comfortable situation. Although affected people have been coping with their personal loss and moving forward for a better life situation, still more attention is needed for public support in the form of health, education and job creation.
