A Study on the English Translation of Chinese Running Sentences on the View of George Steiner’s Hermeneutic Translation Theory—A Case Study of “China Manifested in Trees”
This paper takes as its object of study certain excerpts from the book “China Manifested in Trees” by Liang Heng, and employs George Steiner’s hermeneutic theory in combination with the four steps of hermeneutic translation (trust, intrusion, absorption and compensation) as developed by the translator. The paper then proceeds to analyze the English translation of the text from three levels. The present study focuses on the English translation of Chinese running sentences, with a particular emphasis on the English translation strategy employed in such cases. To this end, the four hermeneutic translation steps of “trust”, “aggression”, “Incorporation” and “compensation” are combined with the three levels of vocabulary, sentence and discourse. The analysis of the English translation of the text is conducted with a view to examining the English translation strategies employed in the case of Chinese running sentences. It also summarizes the common translation methods and devotes itself to exploring the English translation of expressive texts with Chinese characteristics.
