Shear band static evolution based on the generalized nonlinear strength criterion and the extended displacement-controlled method

It is significant to study the static evolution of shear bands in soil slopes under multiple loads using an appropriate strength criterion. This paper presents the development of the extended displacement-controlled method (EDCM) to tackle the problem of multiple loads. The EDCM is derived based on the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury theorem, and it overcomes the limitation of the traditional displacement-controlled method (DCM), which struggles to handle independent multiple loads. The simulation of a thick-wall cylinder indicates the EDCM is reliable and accurate. To more accurately represent soil behavior, the transformed stress method is employed to modify the Drucker-Prager (DP) model with the generalized nonlinear strength (GNS) criterion. Since the formula form of the revised DP model is identical to that of the original DP model, this paper smoothly derives the analytical solution for the strain localization condition of the revised DP model. Based on the GNS criterion and EDCM, a soil slope subjected to multiple loads is studied. As the shape parameter goes down, the slope peak force diminishes, and the onset of localization occurs earlier, and the shear band path shortens. The upper shear band may intersect with lower shear band, which would hinder the slipping of upper shear band.
