Experimental Study on Adaptability of Electrical, Acoustic, and Optical Detection Methods for Metal Particles in GIL
Metal particles in GIL tend to move under electric field, reducing insulation reliability. This paper conducted partial discharge tests using a 252 kV gas-insulated busbar. The pulse current method, built-in UHF sensor, external UHF sensor, ultrasonic sensor, and photon counting sensor were employed to measure partial discharge characteristics of block, sheet, wire, and powder like metal particles. The results showed that the photon counting sensor and the built-in UHF sensor outperform the conventional PD detection method. The photon counting sensor had higher sensitivity to small-size and moving metal particles. The built-in UHF sensor has higher sensitivity to larger metal particles at low voltage levels. This study investigated the applicability of different detection methods for various metal particles, providing technical reference for online monitoring of metal particles in GIL devices.
