The Effect of Fluorescent Fiber Optic Arrangement on Partial Discharge Detection Sensitivity in Gas Insulated Switchgear

Partial discharge defects was a significant factors that affects the reliable operation of GIS during a long time. The partial discharge in GIS detection method based on fluorescent optical fibers, have gained attention for their high sensitivity and resistance to electromagnetic interference. In this study, theoretical calculations were conducted to model the intensity of partial discharge optical signals received by fluorescent optical fibers arranged in linear and annular configurations. The calculations revealed that the annular arrangement received 1.26 times more optical signal intensity than the linear arrangement, leading to higher detection sensitivity. A Fluorescent optical fiber partial discharge detection experimental platform based on a 126 kV GIS was established. Using a suspension discharge defect model, the results demonstrated that the annular arrangement of fluorescent optical fibers achieved a detection sensitivity of 2.7 pC, 1.48 times higher than the linear arrangement. The experimental results showed that the annular arrangement offered superior sensitivity for detecting smaller partial discharge signals. This work provides insights into optimizing fluorescent optical fiber configurations for enhanced partial discharge detection in GIS.
