Forced Oscillation Frequency Sensitivity Analysis During Resonance Condition
Forced oscillations (FOs) in power systems can destabilize grids when their frequencies align with weakly damped natural modes, leading to resonance. As more inverter-based resources (IBRs) are integrated into power grids, the number of potential forcing sources increases, making it crucial to understand their impact on system stability. This study examines FO sensitivity using a frequency scanning approach across three different power systems: Kundur, ERCOT, and EI models. A key focus is determining how close the forced source frequency needs to be to the natural resonance frequency to excite significant FOs. The findings highlight the critical influence of FO frequency near resonance proximity on oscillation amplitudes and differentiate the effects of generator and load-induced FOs. These insights contribute to improved damping strategies and enhanced grid reliability.
