Model Predictive Control of IPMSM EV Traction Drive with MTPA and FW for Wide-Speed Range

This paper introduces a model predictive control (MPC) strategy for electric vehicle (EV) traction drives using an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). The approach incorporates offline-calculated reference tables for Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) and field weakening (FW) to optimize motor performance across a broad speed range. By utilizing these precomputed tables, the MPC system efficiently selects the appropriate current references for achieving maximum torque at lower speeds (via MTPA) and facilitates field weakening at higher speeds, ensuring efficient operation by minimizing computational burden during online execution. The real-time prediction of motor states enables precise voltage adjustments, ensuring optimal torque and flux control. The IPMSM motor can be controlled in torque or speed mode based on control mode selection by vehicle control unit. The results from simulations show that this approach improves motor performance, efficiency, and adaptability, making it suitable for different driving conditions.
