Analysis of the Demand for Energy Storage Due to the Frequency Stability in Renewable Energy Source Dominated Power Systems
For power systems with high proportion of renewable energy resource generation (RES), frequency stability constraints have a significant impact on how the power supply in the system is configured and controlled. A RES dominated power system needs energy storage (ES) to help it to maintain the frequency stability. A configuration method based on time-domain simulation is proposed in this paper, and the ES charging/discharging processes are simulated with different RES proportions and system inertia. The result shows that the energy demand of ES mainly depends on the inertia of the system, economic and coordinated control should be considered in the system design stage.
