Towards Secure and Scalable Industrial IoT: Implementing a MQTT-Based Monitoring and Alert System
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has become a new solution for real-time data collection and processing in the industrial environment, but it presents new security threats in inter-device communication, due to scalability and dependency challenges. Real-time monitoring is a critical aspect of this environment due to the sensitive nature of the tasks carried out. However, existing IIoT monitoring solutions lack a scalable, cost-effective design that emphasizes robust communication security. This paper presents a secure and scalable IIoT realtime monitoring system utilizing the MQTT communication protocol with TLS encryption and role-based access control for publishers and subscribers in the network. The system leverages a low-cost and low-power micro-controller connected to temperature, humidity, and vibration sensors for precise environmental data collection. Data is visualized in a userfriendly Blynk dashboard providing live and historical insights, as well as automated alerts, regarding the industrial device's health. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the security of the system's data transmission, real-time monitoring capabilities, and ease of use. The proposed solution addresses a critical need for secure monitoring systems to support preventative maintenance efforts in industrial environments.
