Practical Approach to Conduct Power Quality Audit with Reference to International Standards (IEEE, IEC, EN) when Implementing Energy Management System and Solutions

This paper expounds on the practical approach to conduct power quality audit with reference to international standards (IEEE, IEC and EN) when implementing energy management system and solutions. The energy management system and solutions include renewable energies and those energy efficient enabler equipment such as variable speed drives, LED lightings, power factor correction capacitor banks and others. Majority of these equipment, energy efficient enablers equipment and renewable energies, are known to directly or indirectly affecting the power reliability and quality in the electrical network. To identify and mitigate the power quality issues, this command the need to conduct power quality audit. A detailed exposition on step-by-step methodology from preaudit preparation, during site audit and post audit follow-up are illustrated. Common oversights and misinformation in the audit such as type of instruments, points of measurement, parameters selection, monitoring period, logging frequency, and alarms threshold are clarified with reference to international standards. The essential topics to be covered in the power quality report is also presented.
