BER performance estimation of an Underwater Wireless Optical Communication System

The bit error rate (BER) performance of a horizontal simplex Underwater Wireless Optical Communication (UWOC) system is evaluated theoretically. The Channel Impulse responses (CIR) for various water types were estimated using the Monte-Carlo numerical simulation technique. The estimated CIRs were further modeled using the double gamma function to obtain a closed-form expression. The closed-form expression is employed to calculate the BER for various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values, bit rates, and attenuation lengths. The required SNR for the communication system for a particular bit rate and communication distance is calculated considering the threshold limit of 10-6. The maximum bit rate that can be communicated to a certain distance in a particular water type can be evaluated from the BER versus SNR plot. The presented work will be useful for system designers to select the system parameters as per the requirement.
