Frequency Support Strategy and Operation Verification of Voltage Source Grid-forming Energy Storage
Challenge of grid frequency quality degradation under high-penetration new energy grid integration is firstly addressed, and then the grid frequency support control strategy based on voltage source grid-forming energy storage as the regulating hardware unit is proposed in this paper. Secondly, based on virtual synchronous generator (VSG) technology, the existing grid-following energy storage converter control loop of Qingfengling Teaching Power Plant, is retrofitted to a grid-forming type. By gradually shutting down existing generator sets and integrating real photovoltaic and wind turbine generator sets to simulate a new energy low-inertia power system, the strategy is finally validated in operation in Qingfengling Teaching Power Plant, in an independent system. It could be summarized that after implementing the control strategy, the maximum frequency drop could be reduced by 0.46Hz compared to before which could benefit the frequency response of high-penetration new energy grid.
