A Fractional Controller for Load Frequency Control Tuned by Metaheuristic Algorithm
This paper implements an optimization technique inspired by the survival strategies of participants in competitive environments Modified Hunger Games Search (MHGS) algorithm, for tuning the parameters of a fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller used for controlling frequency in an interconnected power system. In an interconnected power systems, maintaining frequency stability and managing tie-line power within acceptable limits is critical. To achieve this, the optimization algorithm efficiently calculates optimal controller parameters, improving the dynamics of load frequency control. The method leverages the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) as the objective function, ensuring optimal management of frequency and tie-line power variations. The proposed approach is evaluated on a two area interconnected power system consisting of Area-I consisting of photovoltaic (PV) plant and thermal power plant, and another combining wind turbine (WT) generation with traditional thermal units while considering generation rate limits and governor dead-band effects. The simulation results implemented on MATLAB presents an improved performance with all deviations and dynamics under control.
