A Hybrid Peak Current Mode DC-DC Converter with Swift Response for Automotive Applications
This paper proposes a step-down DC-DC (buck) regulator with fast transient response for automotive applications. The regulator inherits the popular peak-current mode (PCM) control topology and overcome its drawbacks of slow loop recovery by employing an auxiliary path to detect the changes in load current. A charge-injection circuit is introduced to accelerate the loop response during load transient events. Consequently, the proposed converter could achieve low electromagnetic interference (EMI), ultra-low quiescent current and fast-transient response simultaneously. The proposed regulator was designed and layout on a 0.18-µm BCD process. For a typical application of 3.3V input to 1.2V output at 2MHz switching frequency, it can achieve a peak efficiency of 94.8% and the quiescent current is as low as 3.6µA at sleeping mode.
