Vitiligo and thyroid disease: frequency in patients from a tertiary care hospital dermatology service from 2021 to 2023
Background:Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition causing skin depigmentation due to melanocyte loss.Patients with vitiligo are at higher risk for thyroid diseases.Because of this, the study was made to see the frequency at Hospital Jurez in Mexico. Objective: The objective isto determine the frequency of thyroid disease in patients with vitiligo at the Jurez Hospital of Mexico during 2021, 2022, and 2023.Methods: This observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study evaluated vitiligo patients at Hospital Jurez de Mxico from 2021 to 2023.Data were collected from dermatology consultation sheets to identify vitiligo cases, and medical records were reviewed for thyroid disease. Results: A total of 95 patients with vitiligo were identified, 25 (26.4%) of whom were also diagnosed with thyroid disease. The most common thyroid condition was hypothyroidism (23.2%).The average age of these patients was 49.2 years, with 92% being female.TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) levels showed the highest significance (p < 0.001), and diabetes was the most common comorbidity (14.7%). Conclusion:In our sample, we observed a vitiligo prevalence of 26.4%, which is consistent with previous findings in the literature. This result suggests that patients at Hospital Jurez de Mxico may have a prevalence of thyroid disorders comparable to that reported in other studies conducted in the country.
