Analysis of the carbon sequestration potential of Mineirão Stadium through Monte Carlo simulation

This study investigates the carbon sequestration potential of reinforced concrete structures exposed to the atmosphere, using the Governador Magalhães Pinto Stadium (Mineirão) as a case study. Considering that concrete can reabsorb part of the CO₂ emitted during its production throughout its service life, a computational model was developed based on the equation proposed by Possan (2010), adapted for probabilistic estimates through Monte Carlo simulation with a high number of iterations. The analyzed areas correspond to actual structural elements, including stands, roof, façade, and esplanade, totaling hundreds of thousands of square meters of exposed surface. Simulations evaluated different cement types, compressive strengths, and atmospheric exposure conditions. The results indicate that both concrete strength and exposure environment influence carbonation efficiency, with a greater sequestration potential observed in more porous concretes under sheltered internal conditions. Although the original cement type used in the structure is unknown, the simulations suggest that large-scale structures may contribute significantly to carbon recapture over time. The methodological limitation regarding unquantified areas may result in conservative estimates, highlighting the need for further studies. This approach aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 9, 11, and 13), providing technical insights for sustainable construction solutions and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
