Biotechnological and therapeutic applications of Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Açaí) in gastrointestinal disorders: a systematized literature review

Gastrointestinal diseases (GID) affect a significant portion of the global population, and the study of alternative and natural treatments for these disorders is of particular interest. Euterpe oleracea Mart., commonly known as açaí, contains bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential, particularly for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and gastric ulcers, as demonstrated in in vitro and in vivo models. This systematized review aimed to synthesize current scientific evidence regarding the biotechnological and therapeutic applications of açaí in gastrointestinal health. A total of 24 studies relating the effects of compounds and byproducts derived from E. oleracea on gastrointestinal disorders, published between 2014 and 2024, and written in English were reviewed. Most studies explore the biotechnological and therapeutic applications of açaí, emphasizing its antiinflammatory, antioxidant, and microbiota-protective properties. Experimental models revealed that the polyphenols and anthocyanins found in açaí retain their bioactivity after digestion, supporting its use as a functional food. Additionally, both clinical and preclinical trials indicated a significant reduction in intestinal inflammation and a lower risk of colorectal cancer in animal models fed with açaí-enriched diets. These findings suggest that açaí may be a promising alternative in the treatment of GID, with potential impacts on the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases.
