Exploring University Laboratory Safety Research by Bibliometric Analysis

Laboratory safety in universities is a fundamental guarantee for both teaching and research. However, the increasing frequency of accidents in recent years highlights the urgent need for improved management. However, the frequent occurrence of laboratory accidents in recent years has drawn widespread public attention. This study employs bibliometric methods to systematically review 285 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection (2008–2024). Through multidimensional analysis of publication trends, geographical distributions, institutional collaborations, and journal contributions, coupled with advanced keyword co-occurrence and clustering techniques, we identify three dominant research themes: (1) foundational safety education and operational management, (2) advanced risk identification and assessment methodologies, and (3) innovative applications of intelligent safety technologies. The findings demonstrate significant technological transformation in the field, particularly through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI), which are enabling real-time hazard monitoring and predictive risk management. However, critical challenges persist, including inconsistent regulatory enforcement, assessment protocol inefficiencies, and limited technological adoption in practice. To address these gaps, we propose a strategic framework emphasizing: (1) intelligent safety system development, (2) evidence-based decision-making processes, and (3) organizational safety culture cultivation. These interconnected approaches aim to foster interdisciplinary innovation, inform policy enhancement, and strengthen global cooperation in laboratory safety. The insights gained from this study will provide a theoretical basis and actionable guidance for improving laboratory safety management strategies and formulating policies.
