Migrants and Transplants
Abstract This essay explores and imaginatively applies the metaphysics of personal identity developed by the analytic philosophers Derek Parfit, David Wiggins, and Sydney Shoemaker. It considers, with examples taken from the news and from modern literary works, the question of how and how far personal identity is continuous in those who have undergone surgical transplants, amputations, exiles, and other major disruptions.
