As a hungry child I traded favors forleftovers from other girls’ lunches. I walkedthe girls down the lunch line, held their trays, fanned them with my books. On the train Iwatch the woman and her baby and wonderwhat they want. Either one, of the other. Iam cruel and jealous and afraid of loss. Thebaby is blotchy and red, the woman sweating.Yesterday we splurged on the dandelion winein the thin green bottle. Today my fathertexted me. When the bottle is empty, I willuse it to hold a stem of eucalyptus.
