Scratching the Surface of Mycoplasma phocimorsus : A Comment
like to thank the journal and Section Editor Dr. Stanley C. Deresinski for bringing attention to our recently published case report in Emerging Infectious Diseases, which identified Mycoplasma phocimorsus as a cause of pyogenic tenosynovitis in a Danish woman after a cat scratch [2].First, the author questions the administration of doxycycline and moxifloxacin. To clarify, both antibiotics were administered concurrently at the time of diagnosis, in accordance with the dosages outlined in our manuscript [2].Second, I wish to respectfully point out some factual inaccuracies in the vignette. The author states that Mycoplasma phocimorsus was identified as the cause of seal finger in 1991.However, it was Mycoplasma phocacerebrale that was isolated from the infected finger of an aquarium trainer and from the teeth of the biting seal [3].This discovery, published in Clinical Infectious Diseases in 1998, was the first to associate Mycoplasma with seal finger [4].Mycoplasma phocimorsus was first identified in 2023, following the isolation and genomic characterization of six independent strains from Scandinavian patients with seal finger after contact with unspecified
