COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF NATURAL CONVECTION IN A RIGHT-ANGLE TRAPEZOIDAL ENCLOSURE WITH PARTIALLY COOLED INCLINED SURFACE

This numerical study delves into the intricacies of natural convection within a right-angle trapezoidal enclosure. The thermal dynamics is primarily driven by a heated left wall, while the inclined wall undergoes partial cooling in two distinct configurations: top-cooled (Case 1) and bottom-cooled (Case 2). The remaining boundaries are adiabatic, ensuring a focused examination of convective behavior. The aspect ratio, given by the ratio of the top wall height (<i>h</i>) to the bottom wall height (<i>H</i>), is maintained constant at 0.5. The analysis encompasses various Rayleigh numbers (Ra = 100, 500, 1000). Employing the Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations (SIMPLE) scheme for pressure-velocity coupling, this study meticulously calculates velocity profiles, temperature distributions, and both the local and average Nusselt numbers (Nu and Nuavg), which demonstrate how well the heated wall is transferring heat. The Rayleigh number (Ra) underscores the significance of buoyancy forces, while the aspect ratio elucidates the geometric considerations of the enclosure. Our findings reveal a direct correlation between the Ra and the Nuavg, with a rise in Ra leading to enhanced heat transfer. Notably, in Case 1, Nuavg is approximately 48% greater than in Case 2, attributed to the pronounced buoyancy effects. The streamline patterns also depict the fluid's rotating movement inside the cavity. The local Nusselt number variations are intricately linked to the positioning of the cooled section on the inclined wall, further underscoring the nuanced interplay of thermal and geometric factors.
