Utilization of granular local materials in hilly regions for enhancing the economic viability of rigid pavement systems
The construction of rigid pavement systems in hilly locations is beset with economic and logisitcal challenges in material supply and material transportation cost [1]. This paper discusses possibility to achieve economic viability in rigid pavements by making locally available granular material functional while assuring structural performance and durability [2]. This paper discusses the engineering aspects of locally available aggregates in forms of crushed rocks, lateritic soils, and riverbed aggregates to check fitness in concrete mix design [3]. Experimental tests in compressive strength tests, durability tests, workability tests compared to conventional aggregates have been done [4]. Findings in this paper indicate optimum utilization of locally available granular material can reduce constructions cost savings by minimizing environmental impacts, improved durability in life span in design in pavement design without performance lapse. This paper discusses methods to stabilize marginal material to improved qualities to compete in place of imported aggregates [5].
