Analysis of factors influencing construction project scheduling by analytical approach
Issues that revolve around the economic activities often impact the efficacy with which the efforts concentrating on economic productivity are able to contribute to the GDP of the country. Despite the major contributions towards the economies, construction activities face numerous constraints when it comes to the efficient delivery within the set cost, time and quality parameters. This research focuses on understanding the critical issues affecting scheduling of construction projects with special reference to the Indian industry. A detailed literature review highlighted 62 potential-constraining factors, which through expert validation were narrowed down to 35. A total of 107 construction professionals that constituted of project managers, engineers and contractors were surveyed using a structured questionnaire. In this study, the constraints were prioritized using the Relative Importance Index (RII) and ANOVA was used to test for statistical significance. The results reveal influence of factors such as inadequate qualified workforce, changes in legislation, lack of adequate labor force, unexpected site issues, and operational financial problems to be some the most important constraints to project scheduling. Construction professionals are able to enhance planning, execution and performance of projects by understanding and alleviating the limits. This paper aims to fill the gap for the stakeholders by providing them evidence-based arguments which will enable them to make informed decisions to effectively contribute towards the strategic management of construction projects.
