Analysis of key success factors contributing to the effective application of agile project management in the construction industry
In the contemporary, rapid-paced construction sector, the technical demands and project complexities are increasing, which necessitates collaboration of innovative methodologies like agile project management (APM) next to conventional methods such as the waterfall model. Developed primarily by the information technology (IT) industry, APM has gained prominence in various sectors such as healthcare, logistics, and construction as well, since many countries are actively exploring and adapting APM in construction projects. However, the success of APM in construction depends upon several critical success factors (CSFs). Through a comprehensive analysis of the current literature, this study assesses critical factors that influence the effective adaptation of APM in construction projects. The findings are obtained using one-way ANOVA test and the Relative Importance Index (RII) method, which reveal that “close communication” is the most influential factor, followed by “competencies and agile expertise development” and “optimised design, drawings, specifications, and scope of work.” These factors are pivotal in achieving successful APM implementation. The findings provide insights for organisations intending to apply agile methodologies, offering recommendations to enhance customer satisfaction, efficiency, and project success. This study contributes to the literature on APM by highlighting the key factors that support its effective adaptation across various construction project environments.
