Portuguese Cinematic Communism Then and Now: Reading Fernando Lopes's Belarmino (1964) and Marco Martins's São Jorge (2016) with Jacques Rancière

Abstract: This article explores the concept of "cinematic communism" as defined by the philosopher Jacques Rancière in the context of Portuguese film in the mid-twentieth and twenty-first centuries in order to argue for a direct link between the filmmaking in these two periods by looking at the way the body and the corporeal are repeatedly emphasized in both Fernando Lopes's Belarmino (1964) and Marco Martins's São Jorge (2016).
