Chapter One
Abstract This chapter analyzes the role of chance and privilege in Simone de Beauvoir’s career. Thanks to the Republican school system and her social position, she was able to access traditionally masculine spaces without experiencing any real discrimination. This situation allowed her to write freely about the female condition, with distance and lucidity. For her, theoretical reflection precedes self-analysis, and the study of the collective illuminates the individual. This privilege then becomes a true exercise in intellectual freedom.
