Epirus Land Ownership of Titus Pomponius Atticus
Epirus was one of the economically developed regions of the ancient Balkans. It retained its importance during the period of Roman rule, being an attractive place for investment for wealthy owners. Among such rich people was the equestrian Titus Pomponius Atticus, who had an extensive farm in Epirus. His activities in the field of land management in Epirus in the 1st century BC are considered. According to ancient evidence, Atticus's land ownership in this region was used for cattle breeding based on slavery: he owned wide pastures with many cattle, which were herded by slaves. Atticus sold cattle products both on the local and Mediterranean markets, and in addition, he probably took part in providing the Roman armies in the region during various military campaigns. The scale of the holdings, the organization of the economy, the labor force involved in it, and the significant slave administration - all this with a high degree of probability allows us to classify the estates of Attica as holdings of the latifundist type.
