INVESTIGATING FLUID FLOW BEHAVIOR IN PORTABLE CELLULOSIC MICROFLUIDIC DEVICES: A REVIEW
Cellulosic microfluidic devices are rapidly emerging as sustainable platforms for applications in healthcare diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and food safety due to their versatility, low cost, and biodegradability. While the applications of cellulosic microfluidic devices are well documented, the fluid flow behavior within these materials has received less focus. A deeper understanding of fluid dynamics is essential for optimizing device performance and reducing reliance on extensive experimental work. This work critically examines the state-of-the-art modeling and simulation techniques that characterize fluid flow within the porous structures of cellulosic materials. By exploring the interplay between capillary forces, fluid viscosity, and material porosity, the discussion provides a clear theoretical framework that enhances our understanding of these transport phenomena. Moreover, the insights gained from these models offer valuable guidance for optimizing device design and performance, reducing the reliance on exhaustive experimental methods. In outlining current challenges and identifying key research gaps, this work lays the foundation for advancing the development of more efficient, reliable microfluidic devices tailored for resource-limited settings.
