Comparative Analysis of Carbon Footprint Between Pile Foundation Type: a Perspective on the Construction Procedure.

The environmental perspective on civil construction and its impacts is not a new topic, yet it remains relevant due to the increasing energy consumption driven by population growth and the challenges imposed by increasingly taller buildings. In this context, Born et al. (2024) present a database of material consumption in 100 pile foundation projects in southern Brazil, analyzing the carbon footprint per type of pile, considering buildings between 60 and 270 meters high. This paper aims to further the discussions on carbon footprint in foundation design by assessing the carbon emissions generated from different construction methods. Foundation execution times, type of drilling rig, and additional inputs materials for Continuos Flight Auger (CFA), Bored Piles (BRD), and Micro-piles (ROOT) were evaluated. In the end, the results are presented, identifying which foundation solutions have the most impact on carbon emissions.
