Kindergarten education outcomes and teacher’s perspective on learner’s development: A case study in South Butuan District
This study aimed to assess kindergarten learners' outcomes based on the Philippine Early Childhood Care and Development (PECCD) checklist and teachers' perceptions in terms of self-esteem, values formation, and academic readiness at the end of School Year 2024–2025 in South Butuan District. It also explored the challenges faced by teachers in managing kindergarten classes. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, data were gathered from 11 kindergarten teachers through surveys and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. Findings revealed that most kindergarten learners demonstrated an average level of development across all PECCD domains, suggesting general readiness for Grade 1 but indicating untapped developmental potential. Teachers similarly perceived learners’ affective and cognitive traits—such as self-esteem, values formation, and academic readiness—to be at an average level, though areas like confidence, social interaction, and foundational academic skills were found to be weak. A significant positive correlation was established between learners’ affective-cognitive attributes and their PECCD-based developmental outcomes. Thematic analysis identified key teacher-experienced challenges, including nurturing confidence, supporting social-emotional growth, and addressing diverse learning needs. In response to these findings, the study proposes an intervention program titled "Holistic Growth through Collaborative Action (HGCA) for Kindergarten Education", emphasizing the collective involvement of teachers, parents, school administrators, and local government units (LGUs) in promoting holistic child development. The study concludes that while learners are developmentally on track, enhanced support systems and collaborative strategies are essential to ensure their readiness for formal schooling and long-term educational success.
