“Ustava Korolevskaya” and “Zaskleplenie Zvezdozrachnoe”. Information About the English Judicial System in Russian Translations of “Britannia” by W. Camden in the 17th Сentury

The article deals with information about the English courts that was transferred from the historical and topographic treatise written by the antiquary William Camden “Britannia” to its Russian translations. For the first time, fragments of this work were included in the Mercator—Hondius World Atlas and were translated at the Ambassadorial Office in 1637. For the second time, its full text as an independent volume of the “New Atlas” by Blaeu (“Vritannia”) was translated by the elder Isaiah, a representative of the Epiphanius Slavinetsky’s school, in the 1650s — 1661, at the Chudov Monastery. The article examines how accurately the representatives of both translation centers managed not only to interpret the terminology of the original, but also to understand information about the English judicial curiae, both secular and ecclesiastical, that was completely new to them.
