Antibiotics are among the most commonly used medica tions in dentistry today, both for prophylactic and thera peutic reasons. For prophylactic purposes, antibiotics are used before major surgical interventions in the oral and maxillofacial region, in patients with infective endocarditis, artificial valves, congenital heart anomalies, and in patients with compromised immunity.
