The impact of socialization and social structures on humanity: The family as social structure in defining humanity

The notion of humanity is influenced by socialization and societal frameworks, which reinforce, alter, or contest our comprehension of what it entails to be human. Socialization fosters a collective sense of humanity by creating moral frameworks and societal expectations. Institutions such as the family, education, religion, and the media are instrumental in shaping human identity and cultivating a sense of belonging. Historically, legal, political, and economic systems have marginalized specific groups, preventing their full societal participation. Slavery and colonialism dehumanized populations by establishing racial hierarchies that legitimized oppression. Discrimination based on race, gender, or disability persists in undermining inclusive definitions of humanity. Social movements promoting civil rights, gender equality, and disability rights have expanded societal concepts of dignity and personhood. However, we inhabit a world where most humans have a distorted view of themselves. Proverbs asserts, “as he reckons within himself so is he …” Technological progress prompts ethical inquiries regarding human distinctiveness. Artificial intelligence, genetic modification, and transhumanist concepts contest conventional definitions of humanity by obscuring the distinctions between humans and machines. As society progresses, the interaction between socialization and structural forces will persist in shaping and redefining our collective comprehension of humanity, especially regarding concepts such as family and fatherhood, which are central to this paper.
