wl-1117-Laughing with the Sarabhais, the Parekhs, the Mehtas - An Invitation to Rethink Admiration for Indian Family Sitcoms
This commentary interrogates the ideological work performed by 2000s Indian sitcoms like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai and Khichdi in producing and sustaining narratives of Hindu upper-caste innocence. Drawing from the concept of "white innocence" in American media, it examines how these sitcoms normalize upper-caste Hindu identity as the cultural default, feeding into contemporary Hindutva-aligned victimhood discourses in Indian media and politics.
