(wl-3291)-Pink tax in India:How compelling is the evidence?

Using household-level data from 2015-2022, we provide second-order evidence regarding the existence of a pink tax in the Indian context. The magnitude of the tax differs across states and entails a premium of roughly 2-6 times for the fairer sex. In absolute terms, it translates into an additional payout for women-only households of nearly US $300 per year. Policy ideas of the findings are highlighted.

Abstract

Using household-level data from 2015-2022, we provide second-order evidence regarding the existence of a pink tax in the Indian context. The magnitude of the tax differs across states and entails a premium of roughly 2-6 times for the fairer sex. In absolute terms, it translates into an additional payout for women-only households of nearly US $300 per year. Policy ideas of the findings are highlighted.
