Research Status of Anemia Associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a group of chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, encompassing ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). IBD is not merely restricted to the gastrointestinal system; rather, it can involve multiple systemic organs. Globally, both the incidence and prevalence of IBD have been on the rise in recent years. Anemia is a prevalent and severe complication among patients with IBD. The etiologies of IBD-related anemia are multifaceted. Among them, the most common types are iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and anemia of chronic disease (ACD) associated with IBD. The severity of IBD-related anemia and its treatment strategies significantly impact the quality of life and disease prognosis of patients. This article aims to comprehensively review various aspects of IBD-related anemia, including its types, pathogenesis, and treatment modalities.
