Reconstructing Du Fu’s Self-Image in “Zhuangyou”: Through an Imagological Lens

Autobiographical poems by Du Fu, the best representation of the self-image of the poet, have been neglected in the existing research on the “othered” image of Du Fu. This paper, therefore, analyzes the differences in the image of Du Fu, also known as shisheng, reconstructed in the two English versions of “Zhuangyou” respectively by Rewi Alley and Stephen Owen, and intends to explore the contributing factors from the perspective of imagology. Results show that the two translators differ considerably in representing the image Du Fu. Alley portrays Du Fu as an idol of noble character with a particular emphasis on his sympathizing with the sufferings of the common people. Owen is more interested in depicting Du Fu as an ordinary person by zooming in every aspect of his personality while de-emphasizing his exemplary character.
