Real-Time Automatic Switching of Personalized Amplification Gains for Hearing Aid Application

This paper presents a real-time solution to enable automatic switching of amplification gains that have been previously personalized or optimized for a particular hearing aid user. This solution involves the development of a smartphone app to identify different audio environments in an on-the-fly manner based on the Adaptive Resonance Theory 2 clustering. By identifying an audio environment in real-time, the amplification gain values that have been personalized across a number of frequency bands for that environment are selected automatically as part of the signal processing pipeline of hearing aids. The results of the real-time experimentations by the app indicate the switching between the personalized amplification gains are carried out in a seamless manner with high accuracies.
