Device-Centric IoT-Based Smart Bag Monitoring Using Weight and Geolocation Analytics

In an era of increasing personal mobility, the loss of valuable items from bags poses a significant challenge for students, professionals, and travellers. This paper proposes a device-centric IoT-based Smart Bag Tracking System that integrates load cells, GPS, and accelerometer sensors to monitor bag contents and location in real time. Unlike traditional smart bag solutions requiring embedded electronics, this system is noninvasive, cost-effective, and adaptable to any shoulder-strapped bag. Leveraging the ESP32 microcontroller, the system detects weight changes, logs loss events with GPS coordinates, and employs the Haversine formula to trigger distance-based alerts via a Flask-based web dashboard enhanced with Leaflet.js and Chart.js. Experimental results confirm the system’s accuracy in detecting item loss and issuing timely alerts, offering a scalable solution for asset protection. Future enhancements include AI-driven loss prediction and multi-item tracking.
