Uma arquitetura barroco-mestiça: contribuições sefarditas nas casas bandeiristas
Popular Brazilian architecture is made up of a marquetry of mixed forms that intersect in baroque profusion—in excesses, intransigence and paradoxes, to mention just three characteristics. There is no point in searching for its origins to pinpoint a pure mythical identity because said genealogy is unattainable, non-existent. Worth is looking at the crucible of mestizo composition and discovering the different contributions that have been added to it. In relation to São Paulo’s bandeirista houses, we can raise various hypotheses about Sephardic contributions through New Christians families, whether Judaizing or not, who took part in creating them. These hypotheses emerge from the genealogical study of the first owners, finding their New-Christian ancestors, several with processeswhich, judged by the Inquisition, that led to prison or bonfire. Based on this principle, conjectures are raised about some architectural decisions that may point to a deep religious experience and mystical understanding of reality and being in the world of these first Iberian settlers in the region.
