Kalyanak Ghrita Mitigates Ethanol Craving in Ethanol-dependent Mice Model
Export Introduction: Ethanol dependence is characterized by impaired control over alcohol consumption in spite of harmful consequences. Tolerance and craving for alcohol are the key diagnostic criteria, leading to addiction. Anti-craving medications are crucial in treating alcohol dependence. This study investigates the anti-craving potential of Kalyanak Ghrita (KG) in an ethanol dependent Swiss albino mice. Methods: Following approval from the Animal Ethics Committee, ethanol dependence was induced in Swiss mice via intermittent exposure to 20% ethanol over 14 days. Upon confirmation of dependence, the mice were divided into five groups (n = 6). Groups I and II received distilled water and ethanol, respectively. Groups III and IV were administered KG at two different doses, and Group V Naltrexone, alongside ethanol for an additional 14 days. Daily ethanol intake and preference over water, as well as food intake and weight gain, were monitored. Results: Mice receiving the higher dose of KG showed a significant reduction in ethanol consumption (P < 0.05) with results comparable to the standard treatment, Naltrexone. The mitigation in ethanol consumption can be attributed to the Medhya drug components of KG. The ingredients have demonstrated the neuroprotective effect of neurotransmitters, as acetylcholinesterase inhibition, reduces oxidative stress which supports brain health and enhancing cognitive function. Conclusion: KG effectively reduces ethanol craving in ethanol dependent Swiss albino mice, demonstrating its potential as an anti craving agent.
