Selected Integrated Protocol in the Management of Alcohol Use Disorder – A Case Series

Export Introduction: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) includes symptoms of withdrawal, tolerance, and cravings, often resulting in significant social, occupational, or health consequences. Contemporary management is reported to have adverse effects, with limited efficacy and high relapse rates. This emphasizes the prerequisite for integrative management approaches observed as beneficial in clinical practice. The effectiveness of integrated protocol including Ayurveda, Yoga, and family counseling in AUD and on quality of life (QOL) is studied in the case series. Main Clinical Findings: 4 patients attended OPD with inability to control alcohol use, reduced sleep, hand tremor, irritability and increased anger. Diagnosis: Mild to moderate AUD as per the DSM-V criteria. Intervention: Four patients aged 18–50 years were administered with integrative protocol of 45 days with Ajamodarka, Marsa Nasya with Ksheerabala Taila, Snehapana with Dhatryadi Ghṛta, Vamana, Rasayana, family counseling, and Yoga module. Assessments were done using the CIWA-Ar scale, ADS, and QLES-Q-SF on 0th, 8th, and 45th days. Outcome and Conclusion: There was a significant reduction in AUD symptoms and enhancement in QOL.
