Semantic SDG-Mapper: Browser Extension for Mapping Sustainable Development Goals to Open Webpages
Understanding how current affairs and events affect Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is essential for evidence-driven policy-making and tracking our progress towards a sustainable future. Several websites offer tools and services for analyzing the relevance of documents and reports with SDGs, integrating advanced analytics and visualization techniques. However, these tools often rely on keyword matching, not considering the nuanced details of SDGs at the indicator and target levels. Furthermore, they often lack the ability to factor in semantic intricacies underlying the SDGs, limiting effective decision-making. In this work, we propose a novel semantic web extension designed to map documents to relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and also to extract associated targets and indicators. Users can customize the similarity threshold, enabling the tool to retrieve and rank goals, targets, and indicators in descending order based on their similarity score. The effectiveness of this extension was tested on 100 web pages with content directly related, indirectly related, and unrelated to SDGs. The approach shows promising results, with an accuracy rate of approximately 74%.
