Convergence of Complications: Atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome in the Setting of Acute Pancreatitis

This case report presents a rare occurrence of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) following acute pancreatitis in a 14-year-old boy. Initial symptoms of abdominal pain and vomiting led to a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis, confirmed by imaging. Subsequent manifestations, including vision loss and thrombocytopenia, prompted detailed investigations, which ultimately revealed a diagnosis of aHUS. Treatment involved a combination of supportive measures and plasma exchange until hematological remission was achieved. This case underscores the importance of understanding the correlation between aHUS and pancreatitis and whether pancreatitis can induce aHUS as a result of its disease pathology.
