Lexico-grammatical means of expressing the category of space in fairy tale epics of the 19th – early 20th century

The article examines the lexico-grammatical means of creating spatial representations and identifies their functions in literary fairy tales. It analyzes scholarly works from recent decades dedicated to various aspects of studying the category of space and the linguistic means of its expression. It is noted that the category of space is an integral component of artistic representation. Space is a universal medium where all phenomena, objects, and events exist. Through space, each individual expresses their philosophical and aesthetic vision of the world, which is realized in linguistic space. Thus, by studying the language of writers, we can gain insight into the author’s perspective and clarify the peculiarities of their worldview within specific spatial parameters. The article analyzes the lexico-grammatical means of expressing the category of space in fairy tale epics of the 19th – early 20th century, including: names of spatial scenes, topographic formulas, lexical repetitions denoting space, epithets, verbal metaphors often combined with amplification, comparisons, epithets, nouns, and verbal forms. These elements create spatial representations, convey the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of characters, and vividly depict and generalize processes of real-life phenomena. The study of lexico-grammatical means of expressing the category of space in literary works provides valuable material for examining the level and prospects of development of the Ukrainian literary language.
