Lexical-semantic modification of the phytosymbol teren (based on the Bible translated by I. Ogienko)
The article analyzes the verbal phytosymbol of the thorn as a representative of sacred symbolism in the biblical text. The theoretical foundations of the study are based on scientific research by domestic and foreign linguists, philosophers, and psychologists. It is found that the text of the Bible serves as a source of many linguistic symbols and established figurative expressions. A distinctive feature of the phytosymbol is that its semantics is formed under the influence of the discursive expression of sacred and cultural potential. Contexts from the Bible are described in which not only the denotative function of the verbal symbol is realized, but also its deep semantic meaning and duality are revealed. The lexeme thorn and derivatives occur quite often, transmitting a hidden symbolic meaning (bitter fruit; devastation and punishment for human infidelity; betrayal and apostasy; chaos). The analysis of the factual material has shown that the verbal symbol of the thorn appears as an image inspired by God and presents the following seven: 'curse', 'punishment', 'sin', 'spiritual degradation', 'pain', 'death', 'destruction'.
