Phraseological portrait of the narrator in O. Slonovska’s novel «Neglected by Noah»

A phraseological portrait of a person is understood as a linguistic characteristic of a person, based on the use of phraseological units that indicate his general phraseological stock and the peculiarities of its use in order to describe the personality traits, behavioural features, appearance, psychological state, feelings, manner of communication, etc. Although a scientifically balanced definition of this concept has not yet been created. The article describes the phraseological portrait of the narrator in O. Slonovska’s novel «Neglected by Noah», which is Doctor Yurii. His phraseological unit contains mostly commonly used normative stable combinations of words (actually phraseological units, figurative comparisons, proverbs, and sayings) and individual precedent texts. A study of the features of the functioning of phraseological units in the novel shows that all fixed expressions (both in dialogues and in Yurii’s narrative) reflect the narrator’s speech experience, since they reproduce the events narrated by him. The repertoire of semantic rows of phraseological units used in the novel is wide. First of all, they characterize the well-being, psychological state and behaviour of the main character of the work, reproduce his mood (despair, fear, surprise, fright, and trembling). We highlight groups of phrasemes that verbalize actions and perform the function of intensifiers of actions, provide a general figurative characteristic of a person (by behavioural characteristics, social function of a person in society as well as by attitude to work).
