CRITICAL RECEPTION OF SPENGLER’S CULTURAL-HISTORICAL VIEWS BY P. M. BITSILLI

The article is devoted to investigations of P. M. Bitsilli, who had a significant part of his career teaching at the university and other higher educational institutions of Odesa. His conceptual positions are emphasized, which were in line with the changes that took place in the field of the humanities during the 20th century, in the cultural studies in particular. The authors draw attention to the development of methodology by Bitsilli, who asserts the need to get rid of speculative constructions, on the one hand, and positivist simplification in cultural studies. He proposed a unique conception of the morphology of culture, thereby echoing the cultural-historical views of O. Spengler. Bitsilli critically analyzed the conceptual foundations of Spengler’s philosophy of culture and at the same time he used some elements of the categorical apparatus proposed by Spengler. The article is accompanied by the authors’ Ukrainian translations of two reviews of Bitsilli on Spengler’s main works.
