Sustainable development in the tourism sector: The impact of environmental, social, and governance performance on operational efficiency—A multilevel analytical approach
This study presents a comprehensive investigation into the relationship between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and operational efficiency within the tourism industry, utilizes primary data from Chinese listed enterprises spanning 2009 to 2022 , Employing a multilevel analytical framework, the research integrates advanced econometric techniques—such as Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression, Fixed Effects models, and machine learning methodologies including Random Forest, Ridge regression, and ARIMA time series analysis. The findings reveal that ESG performance, alongside firm size, enterprise age, and financial health, plays a pivotal role in shaping operational efficiency across tourism-related sectors. Notably, sector-specific analyses uncover significant variations in how ESG factors influence operational outcomes within distinct tourism sub-sectors, such as accommodation, aviation transport, and tourism services. ESG-driven strategies were found to be particularly effective in enhancing operational resilience, especially in industries vulnerable to external shocks. The study highlights the complex, non-linear relationships between ESG and operational performance, with key factors such as firm size being integral to the successful implementation of ESG practices. The results offer actionable insights for industry stakeholders, providing a strategic roadmap for embedding ESG principles into corporate governance frameworks to promote sustainable development and long-term industry stability.
